There are many causes and effects related to the health and hazards of trees. While simple actions can benefit tree health, slight disruptions over time and sudden changes to the surroundings can lead to tree failure. PRUNING

Pruning is the most fundamental tree care practice and there are a few different types to consider. When applying the right type of pruning, it can benefit the long-term health of the trees, the safety of the property, as well as the functionality and beauty of the landscape. We access all parts of the tree with expertise to:

  • Remove branches that are dead, diseased, broken, or weakly attached with properly executed cuts

  • Trim trees that are encroaching on structures, views, utility lines, and other parts of the landscape

  • Thin trees to increase light exposure, reduce the amount of stress from wind or snow, or restore its natural growth form

  • Train young trees to develop and maintain a strong structure

We always consider the species, size, age, health, and location of the tree on your property to help you decide what to prune. Often, late winter is the best time to prune trees.

SELECTIVE THINNING

Thinning is a forestry practice that selectively removes unwanted trees from a landscape. Combined with pruning dead lower branches off the remaining trees, it is effective in opening up the view, and letting in more light and air. If done properly, thinning can give the remaining trees and other plants more access to nutrients. The balance must be weighed carefully when choosing which trees to be removed and which trees to leave standing. Clearing stands of dead wood is also a recommended FireSmart practice to help with wildfire mitigation.

STORM RESTORATION

If you have fallen trees on your property after a storm and need assistance, you can call or text us anytime at 807-464-5988. Fallen trees and large limbs can be under enormous tensions in ways that are not obvious. They demand a cautious approach. Please let us handle them safely.

In the event that a tree is damaged by a storm it may be beyond saving. However, trees that aren't badly damaged will benefit from pruning to minimize any effects of the storm. If trees have broken limbs, torn bark, or are bent over with snow and ice loads, we can stabilize them or start any necessary pruning. Depending on the extent of the damage, the pruning may need to be done over several years to allow the tree the best possible chance of survival.

CHAINSAW MILLING

Turning logs into beautiful pieces of custom rough-cut lumber or live-edge slabs are great alternatives to using them for firewood. When taking into account internal characteristics like knots, growth rings, cracks, and blemishes, we estimate where to cut for an ideal beam or slab. This process helps make each cross-section aesthetically unique and structurally sound.

FIREWOOD

We love talking about firewood! If you have any questions about wood, we're happy to give our recommendations. We can share our expertise on the wood's heating quality and the best course of action for splitting, stacking, drying, and burning it. Once we cut the tree to your desired lengths, we recommend that the rounds be split and loosely stacked as soon as possible to get the best value from the wood.
